Books and a Blanket

By Melissa Freeman

This ministry, started by Harper Cunningham and augmented by sister Maggie, has engaged the hearts of a lot of Brazos Valley folk. Young Harper, an elementary student who loves to read, wanted to “spread the love” to students who might not have the same exposure to books that she has. Her sister said a lot of kids might be cold, too, so they should add a blanket to the book. Collection boxes went up all over College Station and on Tuesday, December 15, over 2,000 books and over 400 blankets in colorful bags made their way to Davis gym on the Elementary school Campus—one bag and blanket for each elementary student, and five books to give the bag serious weight.

Sales Tax Board moves toward Event Center construction

By Melissa Freeman

In a meeting marked by long discussions and very little positive action, the Hearne 4A Sales Tax Board did manage to make two decisions other than “table” or “defer to 4B” on two matters. It did agree to add $100,000 to the $75,000 it had already pledged to build an Events Center next to the Hearne Depot. The pledged funds will be used as incentive to potential grantors, showing the city’s willingness to do its part. One government (US Department of Agriculture Rural Development) grant and one private grant, totaling $700,000, are possible, said Hearne Economic Development Director Kent Brunette. Other grants are remotely possible but less likely, he said.
