Students, parents, facility and HISD Administration met in solemn assembly on Thursday evening in the Hearne High School Cafetorium to welcome three outstanding students into the Hearne National Honor Society. Accepting the pledge and promising to be leaders in their school and community were seniors Gustavo Lopez, William Toliver and junior David Hernandez.
Master of ceremonies for the Thursday event was graduating senior and NHS president Kyle Castilleja who welcomed guests and participants. After the invocation, pledge to the U.S. and Texas flags, and a history of the National Honor Society delivered by NHS members Martha Alvarado, Bielka Esqueda, and Rubi Hernandez, Castilleja ushered in the candlelight ceremony. NHS members Erica Vasquez, Juan Rodriquez, Carla Hernandez, and Castilleja each explained a hallmark of NHS—Scholarship, Service, Character, and Leadership—and lit a candle representing that quality.
Next, the inductees lit a candle as part of their entrance into the Society, and all members including the new ones stated the NHS pledge.
Superintendent Joy Toney congratulated the inductees and accepted them into NHS, and Toney and Hearne High School Assistant Principal Kemp presented the certificate and card to each new member.
A highlight of the evening was Master Teacher Jay Davis’ “words of inspiration.” Davis told the students that “success isn’t being perfect—it’s not letting failures stop you or get in your way.” He explained that everyone failed from time to time but the successful did not let obstacles stop them. They kept on; they kept trying, despite disappointments and momentary failures. He explained that he believed everyone was on earth to fulfill a purpose and urged students to find out what their purpose was and achieve it. “Keep trying. Do not stop.” Then he quoted a Jewish proverb—“What you are is God’s gift to you. What you become is your gift to God.”
The close out the ceremony, Castilleja thanked the audience for attending and directed members and friends to the refreshment table.
