It pays to be drug free
Hearne High School senior, Juana Esqueda, was awarded the first ever ZT Scholarship at graduation Friday night. The scholarship fund, established by the Zero Tolerance Youth Coalition through the Brazos Valley Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse, was generated to reward the courage and leadership of graduating seniors who have exemplified a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Youth coalition members raised money through fundraising starting in the Spring, and with the generous help of caring community members the total amount awarded totaled to $725.
Michael Chism, the coalition’s organizer, said, “There’s two messages we want to send to young people with this scholarship: one, that it pays to be drug free- literally. And two, that the people of this community care deeply about your ability to pursue a higher education.”
Ms. Esqueda was selected among many other deserving applicants due to her lifestyle of healthy choices, her participation in substance abuse reduction strategies, and the positive influence she made on her peers. She plans to attend Texas A&M University in the Fall.
